On Monday (May 29th), Zé Trovão addressed a letter to the United States Embassy in Brazil, informing them about the presence of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Brazilian territory, and asking for information regarding “what measures can be taken by the American government to apprehend this criminal.” Maduro met with President Lula (PT) on Monday morning at the Palácio do Planalto. The leaders are expected to discuss progress in the process of normalizing bilateral relations, including the reopening of respective embassies and consular sectors, as well as the designation of the Venezuelan ambassador to Brazil. The upcoming Venezuelan elections, scheduled for 2024, are also likely to be on the agenda.

In 2020, the head of the US Department of Justice, William Barr, criminally charged Maduro with international drug trafficking. At the time, the US announced a $15 million reward for anyone who could help capture the Venezuelan president. In the letter, Zé Trovão informs about Maduro’s presence in Brazil and mentions that the Venezuelan president is listed on the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) website as “wanted by US authorities, accused by the US Attorney General, Mr. William Barr, of crimes such as drug trafficking, international terrorism, and corruption.” The document is addressed to the US ambassador to Brazil, Elizabeth Frawley Bagley. “I express my indignation to this Embassy regarding the presence of the Venezuelan dictator on Brazilian soil, while also requesting information about what measures can be taken by the American government to apprehend this criminal,” wrote the federal deputy.

In addition to Maduro, other Venezuelan authorities have been accused of “participating in a criminal association involving an extremely violent terrorist organization, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), and an effort to flood the United States with cocaine.”
