Despite US pressure, two Iranian warships are docked in Brazil

By Tiago Lucero with information from CNN Brasil

According to the Port Authority of Rio de Janeiro, the helicopter carrier IRIS Makran and the frigate IRIS Dena arrived in Brazilian waters on Sunday (26) and remained in the Port of Rio until March 4.

The stop in Brazil was authorized by the Navy, which published an order in the Official Gazette on the 24th, allowing the “crew to disembark and socialize, observing local health standards in force in accordance with the epidemiological conditions at the time of the visit”.

Previously, the US ambassador to Brazil, Elizabeth Bagley, said that Iranian ships already had UN experience and were involved in terrorist activities and illicit trade, and that they should not dock anywhere.

The Brazilian government even delayed the authorization, but ended up allowing the visit of the Iranian ships.
